So what is solar project development? We can argue definition but to us it means the steps that go into moving a solar project from idea to electricity. These steps may be done by one person, an organization or a distributed team but there are core things that need to happen for a project to go from an idea to electricity.
At it's basic level it is about finding a customer or project, determining whether it is feasible from a technical and financial perspective, completing the technical design, finding someone to pay for it, getting it built and taking care of it after it is running.
But someone has to be shepherding the project through each of these steps, this is who we would consider the project developer.
The process can take days to years, be a small residential project or a multi megawatt utility project but there are a core set of things that need to happen in order for a solar system to make it into the real world. Every project needs a caretaker or it dies along the development path.
Project development is an art and a science. There are clear steps and process that can be followed. There are best practices that can be adopted but every project is it's own animal. There will be challenges to overcome, there will be risks to be mitigated, there will be stakeholders who need coaxed along. The best developers have a mixture of technical, financial and people skills. They are creative, they are fearless and probably most of all, they are persistent.
